Chocolate Guinness Whipped Cream
Unbelievably creamy chocolate whipped cream with a subtle yet distinctive flavor of Guinness malt. Looks just like the foamy head on a pint! This chocolate Guinness whipped cream is the perfect addition to any St. Patrick's Day celebration, and makes an awesome dessert dip. Try topping Bailey's Chocolate Pie with it!
I'm not Irish, but I do live in the Boston area – and St. Patrick's Day is basically the biggest holiday of the year around these parts.
I went to the St. Patty's Day parade in Southie once when I was younger, and good lord never again. It was fun, and funny, and cold, and liquor-fueled, and loud, and green, and there were a whoooooole lot of bagpipes.
It's one of those things you have to do once to say that you've done it – like New Year's Eve in Times Square. So, I did it and I'm not doing it again.
Instead, I will be snoodled (it's a word, shush) up to a warm fire with some Irish coffee topped with my ridiculous delicious chocolate Guinness whipped cream.
Key Ingredients
- Heavy cream – This is the base of our whipped cream. You can also use whipping cream.
- Mascarpone cheese – My favorite ingredient for whipped cream and frosting, mascarpone cheese adds creaminess and stability, without too much sweetness.
- Dark chocolate cake mix – I recommend Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Cake Mix, but any dark chocolate cake mix will work.
- Guinness – Just remove any foam as you want the dry stout itself for the recipe. And then save the rest of the beer to enjoy on its own!
- Powdered sugar – This is optional, and frankly I usually leave it out because I like things on the less sweet side.
How to make chocolate Guinness whipped cream
- Chill a large mixing bowl in the fridge or freezer for at least 15 minutes.
- In your chilled bowl, combine mascarpone cheese and heavy cream and use a hand or stand mixer to mix on a low setting until mostly combined.
- Add cake mix and slowly increase speed to high and whip until stiff peaks form – it may take a little while, so be patient!
- Add Guinness (make sure to remove the foam from the top) and whip until medium peaks form.
- Taste and add powdered sugar 1 tablespoon at a time if you'd prefer it a bit sweeter, whipping after each addition.
Heat treating the flour in the cake mix
If youโre concerned about the potential for bacteria in raw flour, you can quickly heat treat the cake mix by spreading it out onto a baking sheet and toasting it at 350ยฐF for 5 minutes. Let it cool, then follow the instructions in the recipe card.
Stable, but super creamy whipped cream
Doesn't it look just like the foam head on the top of a Guinness pint? I was pretty proud of myself that it turned out that way since it was a total accident completely intentional.
It's so creamy. SO creamy. But it still has enough stability and the perfect consistency to be piped onto cakes, cupcakes, brownies, a spoon, my face… what? Don't pretend you wouldn't consider it.
Storage
Keep this whipped cream in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days – you may need to give it a quick rewhip before serving. Admittedly, mine has never lasted that long because it almost always gets gobbled up on the first day!
What to pair with Guinness Whipped Cream
Pipe it high atop your favorite cupcake recipe. Chocolate cupcakes or cake are a fabulous choice!
Fruit dipped right in its face – you know, if whipped cream had a face.ย Lots of people put this in a big bowl and use it as a delicious dessert dip at parties!
Or to be piped into shot glasses or fancy dessert dishes for the cutest and most delicious dessert… and top them with chopped up Andes mints.
Pretzels. I highly recommend the pretzels. Y'all know how I love salty and sweet, and that combination is perfect-o.
So here's the tl;dr:
- Creamy
- Fluffy
- Chocolate flavor that's light as air.
- Subtly sweet with that signature Guinness malt tang
- The perfectly subtle way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day
May it bring you the luck of the Irish!
FAQs
In the case of this Guinness whipped cream recipe, no :) There's only about 1/4 cup Guinness in the entire batch, so you're not going to get tispy from it.
Heavy must contain at least 36% milk fat, and whipping cream must contain 30%-35% milk fat. For the sake of this recipe, you can use either one – but I recommend heavy cream for the best results.
American cream cheese is much more tangy than mascarpone, and mascarpone is a much more subtle and slightly sweet flavor. Mascarpone is also more soft, creamy and dense than cream cheese. If you were to dip a knife into a container of mascarpone, it would spread beautifully, similar to butter spreads.
I typically find mascarpone in the deli section of my grocery store, by the other cheeses, hummus, and meat products.
If you can't get your hands on Guinness, you can try another Irish Stout like Murphy's or O'Hara's, or Imperial Stout like Samuel Smith's. You can also check out your local brewery and ask them if they produce a Guinness-like stout as well.

Made this for a work event and it was a hit! Coworker 1 couldn’t stop dipping pretzel after pretzel into the bowl. Coworker 2 told me “you better not take the leftovers home!!” and “you are not allowed to make this again!” (because she wanted to eat it all). I made it without adding the optional powdered sugar, and I served it with pretzels and strawberries. Both great options, but I’m with you on the salty/sweet combo.
Love everything about this!
I know the point is to put this on something or dip something into it, but um, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t get any further than just eating it out of the glass with a spoon. ?
I’m not saying that’s how I usually consume it, but… oh who am I kidding. That’s exactly how I usually consume it!
Now this is what whipped cream should be! Love the flavors and that Guinness, yup! I can’t wait to try it out, many times over!
Yay!
So funny because I’ve been to the Southie parade once, as well, and said “OK, I’m all set thanks!” I would much rather sit at home with a big vat of this whipped cream and an Irish coffee or glass of whiskey or something!
Sues
SAME!
Wow, this is so creative! I can only imagine how delicious this is on top of chocolate cake. And with salty pretzels or Andes mints? Sold!
The first thought that popped into my head when I read the name of your recipe was “Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!!” This looks absolutely spectacular! My hubby and I will be “snoodled” at home this St. Patty’s Day with our toddlers (I wouldn’t have it any other way) but I think I’m going to have to make this whipped cream for my husband!
That sounds like the perfect plan to me!
So decadent, and yes, light as air. Fluffy perfect topping for a lot of good things. Yum!
This recipe looks decadently delicious! The cream looks so soft and silky. Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day! :)
“St. Patty’s day in southie”? That sounds like such a cool experience. I am pretty sure, however, I like the idea of it more than the reality. I hate crowds. This dessert, however, looks freaking fantastic!
As an Irish Girl, Saint Patrick’s Day is spent going to church in the morning to celebrate Saint Patrick. I will love to make your Guinness whip cream to top some Irish Coffee in the evening! I bet it would be great on so many desserts too!
Oh my – I need this whipped cream in my life! What a brilliant idea to add Guinness!
oh my! I would love this on top of some chewy brownies, or, if we’re being honest, by the spoonful right out of a bowl! I never thought to use Guinness as a topping for dessert, but I’m totally on board!
And just when I thought whipped cream couldn’t get any better. I’m not Irish, but I’ll celebrate St. Patrick’s Day if I get to enjoy this!
