Chocolate dipped bacon strips coated in sugar and toffee pieces sitting in a clear glass

Chocolate covered bacon is a sweet and salty snack that’s sure to be a hit! Strips of salty bacon are dipped in chocolate, and can be candied before coating in your favorite chocolate.

Here’s the great thing about chocolate-covered bacon: everything. Just… everything.

Besides just being delicious, making it is pretty quick and easy, and really requires no baking skills. As long as you can turn on an oven and melt chocolate, that’s about the extent of the expertise needed!

Chocolate dipped bacon… not just for state fairs anymore, my friends.

    Ingredients for chocolate covered bacon

    • Bacon strips – The thickness of your bacon makes a difference. I usually opt to not use thick-cut bacon because the result is more chewy than crispy (but still freaking delicious, don’t get me wrong).
    • Chocolate – You can use chopped chocolate bars, chocolate chips, or chocolate melting wafers. I prefer dark chocolate, but you could also use semi-sweet chocolate or milk chocolate.
    • Coconut oil – This is used to thin out the melted chocolate for dipping purposes. You can substitute another kind of low-flavor oil as well.

    How to make chocolate-covered bacon

    Cook bacon – oven method

    1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line one rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and place an oven-safe wire rack on top of the foil. Line a plate with paper towels, and line another baking sheet with parchment paper, and set both aside.
    2. Place each coated bacon strip on the wire rack of your foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes until dark brown, firm and crisp. You may need additional time, as thicker slices will need longer to cook through.12 bacon strips
    3. When done baking, immediately use tongs to transfer each slice to your paper towel-lined plate to cool completely.

Cook bacon – air fryer method

    1. Line a plate with paper towels, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside.
    2. Arrange your slices of bacon in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer and how many slices you’re making, you may need to do this in multiple rounds. You can also cut each bacon slice with kitchen shears in half to make smaller strips.
    3. Cook at 400°F for around 15 minutes until dark brown, firm and crisp. When done cooking, carefully use tongs to transfer each slice to your paper towel-lined baking sheet to cool completely.

    Melt chocolate

    1. For dipping purposes, you may want to thin out the chocolate a bit. Add oil to chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave in 15 second intervals, stirring until completely melted and smooth. Transfer to a tall and deep glass to make it easier to dip the bacon.
    2. Dip each piece of bacon in the melted chocolate, and place bake on parchment lined baking sheet to set. If desired, decorate with maple sugar, toffee pieces, sprinkles, or additional chocolate drizzles.
    3. If your house is cool enough, let them sit at room temperature to set. Otherwise you can expedite the process and place the sheet in the fridge and they should be set in about ten minutes.

Is chocolate-covered bacon the same as candied bacon?

It’s not, actually – but I have a whole post about making candied bacon, which you could totally do prior to dipping them in chocolate for a double whammy of flavor.

    FAQs

How do I store chocolate dipped bacon?

Once the cooked bacon is room temperature, you can store it in an airtight container between pieces of parchment or wax paper in the refrigerator for up to 1 week – though mine has always been gobbled up long before then!

    Can I use white chocolate?

You sure can! Just follow the same instructions to melt the chocolate, making sure to only heat the white chocolate until it’s almost melted and stir until smooth (white chocolate is more finicky than other chocolates).

What kind of bacon should I use?

Thick-cut bacon slices will result in a more chewy result with crispy edges, while thinner slices will be more uniformly crisp. Both are delicious – it’s just a matter of your preference. Flavored bacon like maple bacon or thick slices of applewood-smoked bacon are also great choices.

    Notes

Note: I like to use two overlapping sheets of aluminum foil on a rimmed baking sheet for cooking the bacon to ensure the grease doesn’t spill out.
Bacon thickness: Thick-cut bacon slices will result in a more chewy result with crispy edges, while thinner slices will be more uniformly crisp (and better for crumbling). Both are delicious – it’s just a matter of your preference.
Candied bacon: If you’d like, you can candy the bacon before adding the chocolate! Follow the process in this post.
