“I should definitely take some time off, I’m burnt out. I’ll just take a week – that won’t be so bad. [looks up vacation locations] Alright, I can’t afford an actual vacation. I mean, I could, but then I can’t eat for a couple months. Which wouldn’t be the worst thing because it would force me to be super frugal and creative with what I have at home. But what if it surpasses frugal and I can’t pay my bills? Alright, scratch the idea of traveling to any kind of resort-type deal. Maybe I should go home to Chicago and visit everyone. Eh, but the flights are so damn expensive. Plus then I’ll have to plan every second of every day to make sure I see everyone. Ugh. That’s stressing me out. Alright, I’ll just do a stay-cation. But then I’m forcing [out of office person’s name] to cover for me when I’m just sitting on the couch doing nothing, and that’s not cool. I’d feel guilty. And then my work will pile up and I might as well just be in the office. That’s just stupid, because I’ll be thinking about it all the time. Okay, maybe I won’t take a week, I’ll just do a long weekend somewhere close. [looks up hotel rooms] Ugh! Weekend rates in New England are twice the weekday rate. HOW DO PEOPLE AFFORD THINGS LIKE THIS? Screw it, I’ll just take this Friday off and sleep.”
These are what I’m considering the “basics” – sunscreen, body wash, moisturizer, flip flops, wedges for a dressier occasion, a bikini, and a beach bag (to hold most of the above). There are also a couple bonuses that I still consider necessities – an underwater camera (for which I’ll probably end up getting a disposable one with blurry pictures of sea turtles and have no idea where to have the pictures developed when we return), a container to hold a collection of sand, seashells and starfish I find on the island, and a fruity drink. I anticipate many, many fruity drinks. I can’t be on the island where Cruzan Rum is made and not take advantage, right? Right. One of the great things about staying on a private island with a family-run resort is that I won’t have to worry about bringing a beach towel because they have them there. One less thing to pack! I’m going for the bare minimum so that I can carry everything with me on the plane.
