Before I bought my handy dandy electric milk-frother, I had a tried and true process. I warmed milk for my coffee in a small saucepan where it was constantly whisked until it was hot, then I transferred it to a stainless steel jug and used a handheld milk-frother to get it all nice and foamy and then I would use a large spoon to hold back the milk, pour it in my coffee, and then spoon the foam on top. It worked great, but it took five things I then needed to wash by hand in the sink (because where I live now doesn’t have a dishwasher – SIGH). It was kind of a pain, so I didn’t want to do it every morning before work. I needed something more simple and I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a new appliance.
And then I stumbled upon an article on one of my favorite sites, The Kitchn that handed me a new method that was exactly what I needed. It was simple, quick, and I would only end up two things to wash by the end of it (not counting my coffee cup, of course).
Look at that. Look how pretty that is. Milky and foamy and frothy and wonderful. And it’s seriously so easy. Let me break this down for you.
- Pour 1 cup of milk (more or less, depending on the size of the mug you’re using and what kind of milk to coffee/espresso ratio you prefer) into a mason jar.
- Put the lid on tightly.
- Shake it like it stole your lunch money for about 30 seconds.
- Take off the lid and place it in the microwave. Nuke it for 30-60 seconds.
- Use a spoon to hold back the foam while you pour it in your prepared coffee, and then top with the foamed milk.
That’s it. You’re done.
See above – to the left is the “before” of cold milk just after I poured it into the jar, and to the right is the “after” where I shook it like a maniac for half a minute. It’s more than doubled in volume!
In this instance I used whole milk because that’s what I had on hand, but this works just as well with 2% (maybe even better) and that’s what I usually use. I didn’t want a ton of foam on the latte I had made in these pictures, but with a little more milk and a little more muscle you could have as much as you want.
What I really love about it is that it becomes the perfect platform for whipped cream. And if you need to know anything about me, it’s that I will find any excuse to pile whipped cream onto things.
So go forth and use that mason jar sitting in your cabinet – just think of it as a little morning exercise! It’ll help you work off that whipped cream.0
