Like all dogs, Penny loves treats. Sweetbabyjesus, does she love treats. I’ve made her plenty of treats myself and figured out what she loves, what she really loves, and what makes her lose her mind she loves it so much. Because let’s be honest here – she loves pretty much everything, so it’s just the varying levels of love I have to gauge when it comes to her.
Cold Hollow Cider Mill recently reached out to me about trying some of their products and using them to create some new, unique recipes and of course I said yes. Cold Hollow has been one of my favorite places in New England for the last 12 years and I was absolutely thrilled (and honored!) that they would think of me. What, don’t believe me? Let’s look at the evidence, shall we?
Anyway, back to my story. So this huge, adorable box from Cold Hollow showed up on my doorstep and I could hardly contain myself I was so excited. I ripped it open and started digging through the contents (more on that in a future post) and found a wonderful surprise – a bag of dog treats! Cold Hollow Cider Mill Doggie’s Donuts, to be exact. It was such a thoughtful addition, and I knew Penny would appreciate the gift.
According to their site, the treats are “A dog’s version of a Cider Donut! The most popular question at the Mill is ‘What happens to all the left over apple mash (pomace) once the cider is pressed?’ We now combine our apple pomace, sweet potato, GMO free cornmeal, whole wheat flour, and apple cider to produce ‘doggie’donuts’ Each bag contains 10- 5″ biscuits.”
I love capturing the evolution of Penny’s emotions when she gets a new treat for the first time – she always starts skeptical, and it takes her quite a while to finish it because she picks it up and spits it out and breaks it apart and… well, it’s a process. But after that first treat has been consumed, it’s always smooth sailing.
Per usual, she tried to play it cool. “What’s that, treats? That’s cool. Whatev.”
“I’m just resting my mouth on the table because my head is heavy. It doesn’t have anything to do with this bag that’s sitting here. I don’t even care about that.”
“OHMYGOD WHAT’S IN THERE? I mean… what’s that? I’m asking for a friend.”
“MOM WHAT IS THAT? I WILL DO ANYTHING YOU WANT FOR IT. LOOK HOW GOOD I’M MEERKATING.”
Please note the visible foamy drool.
“Okay fine, I REALLY WANT THAT. It looks amazing, mom. Seriously – have you seen it? It’s so beautiful! And it smells amazing? Can I have it, pleaaaaaase? Look how pretty I am, mom! MOM! LOOK!”
“I’m just gonna go ahead and take that from you kthx.”
She got right to it and dropped to the ground to start checking it out. She chomped on it for quite a while – I realized the whole treat might be a bit much size-wise, so I’ll probably break them in half in the future.
After she cleaned up her mess (my deck was spotless by the time she was done), she gave me this pathetic look:
Me: “No, Penny. You can’t have another one right now. Stop looking at me like that. OH, FINE.” [hands over the bag]
Just kidding – we went for a nice run instead to work off the calories. I’m pretty sure she forgot the treats even existed until the next time I grabbed the bag and it was like Christmas all over again for her. If your dog is anything like her, she’ll love these treats, too! If you live in the area of Waterbury, Vermont make sure you stop in and grab some. Otherwise, place an order today. Make sure you add some yummy stuff for yourself, too – you can’t go wrong with anything they make.
Thanks again to Cold Hollow Cider Mill for the generous gift!
